I haven't posted here in ages, but I wanted to let y'all know that there are now three (mostly) active blogs for individuals that are a part of our Church of the Nazarene in Mid-City. All of their blogs sit on the JustEnough.org server:
Josh hasn't started blogging yet, but will be doing so soon. We still have this blog, the Housing Co-op discussion blog, and The Arts blog that are operational in some capacity. The "Arts" one as well as an upcoming "Collective" blog are being planned as 'group blogs' where anybody with an account can post to it.
I encourage anybody that is a part of CoN Mid-City to contact me if they would like to start up a blog!

Pastor John is reading some stuff about consumerism. He mainly just set us up for the books he is going to read, but they sound rather interesting. Here's the skinny: I've started reading several books (probably a bad sign). One is Philip Cushman's Constructing the Self, Constructing America: A Cultural History of Psychotherapy recommended to me by my colleague at PLNU Brad Strawn. I've also picked up a new book by Vincent J. Miller, Consuming Religion: Christian Faith and Practice in a Consumer Culture. Yet with these in mind, I'm also reading in the nineteenth century British Christian, Cardinal John Henry Newman. I'm reading Newman because it seems to me that he was ahead of our times in noticing the dangers already facing the church at that time, and advocating returning to the first five centuries of Christian history to develop a means of resistance against this encroaching modernity/consumerism -- of which it had not yet blossomed in its most pernicious form for the life of the church.
(I've added the Amazon links)
I hope to hear from him soon on these reads!

William T. Cavanaugh, probably most well known in theological circles for writing Torture and Eucharist, has published a piece on consumerism in Sojourners:
When Enough is Enough
Very appropriate for our "Just Enough" theme.

Yes, I can use tildes however I please. At least for today.
But back to the subject at hand before I got over-zealous about tilde use: there's a Just Enough meeting tonight!
Lee Van Ham is going to be there to speak to us about the Jubilee Economics Ministry's "Circles of Abundance" program. There's a bunch more info on it the previous post here.
Hope to see you all there!

This Thursday, we are going to have a wonderful Just Enough meeting! At 7pm at the Lewis-Beevers' house, I hope you will all join us.
Lee Van Ham is going to join us to share in our discussion and to also share with us his Jubilee Economics Ministries Circles of Abundance program.
Circles of Abundance asks the question, "How can congregations increase their practices of alternative economics?"
From their website:This "Circles of Abundance" is a design for groups that earnestly desire to shape their personal lifestyles, their households, their workplaces, and/or their congregations according to the economic paradigm of abundance, also called the abundance of God's enough, gift economy, and sabbath-jubilee economics. As such, circles of abundance contrast with the prevailing economic paradigm of scarcity, i.e., the distribution of insufficient resources for human, plant, and animal life. We will be happy to talk with you about how you can design popular learning experiences with persons who want to shift economic paradigms step-by-step.
Sounds like it will be a fun presentation and discussion.
Something we talked about on the meeting we talked about on the 20th was trying to get people re-interested in our group. If you'd like to reconnect with our group, or know somebody who you think would fit well with the mission of Just Enough who hasn't yet been introduced to our group, then please join us! We'd like to see you again, or for the first time! This Thursday will be especially rad because Lee Van Ham always has challenging things to say, and he always does it in a gentle way. That's one of the many reasons why we think he's such a blessing to be a part of this group.
The as-always details dept.: Just Enough will be at Brian & Cassie's address is: 4129 Highland Ave. #4, San Diego, CA 92105 - over in the Mid-City area.
If you have any questions, concerns, suggestions about anything, don't hesitate to e-mail me at or call me at 619-929-2467.
Also, feel free to start commenting on the posts here on the blog. Interaction is encouraged!
Hope to see you all there!

We've secured justenough.org! This happened a few weeks ago, but I was finally able to set it up so that everything at justenough.org works correctly.
Now, whenever you tell somebody about our humble website, you can save yourself a couple of syllables and recommend "just enough dot org"!

Deron Matson has just informed me that Recycling is starting at Mid City Church of the Nazarene in February!
Thanks to Nate Brown and the rest of the Just Enough crew for taking the initiative and getting the ball rolling on this important venture.

My good friend and roommate Dave-O links to this exposé on Wal-Mart:
Is Wal-Mart Good For America?
Living sustainably in the Kingdom? I wouldn't look to Wal-Mart for any cues on this.
